Ein kleiner Junge sagte ruhig, er könne ein abstürzendes Flugzeug zum Absturz bringen – als sich die Cockpittür öffnete, floss Blut aus dem Gesicht seiner Mutter.

The boy’s mother didn’t let go of his arm.

– Do you know the pilot?

– Not him – the boy replied. – The clock.

The plane shook again.

The flight attendant reached into the cockpit and, with the help of two passengers, pulled the unconscious man out. He was breathing, but he did not respond.

The co-pilot was lying collapsed over the instrument panel.

A broken voice came through the radio.

The boy stepped toward the door and glanced at the controls.

– TURN ON THE AUTOPILOT! THE ROW OF SWITCHES ON THE RIGHT, BETWEEN THE TWO WHITE BUTTONS!

The flight attendant hesitated.

– How do you know that?

– Because I practiced on this exact type for months.

His mother looked at him in disbelief.

Then the boy finally told her the truth.

His father, whom his mother had separated from years earlier, worked as an aircraft mechanic at a training center. After the divorce, they could rarely see each other, so on weekends he secretly took his son into the simulator room.

At first, they only played.

LATER, HIS FATHER TAUGHT HIM THE BASICS OF THE INSTRUMENTS, HOW TO USE THE RADIO, AND HOW TO MAINTAIN ALTITUDE USING THE AUTOPILOT.

– He told me not to talk about it – the boy confessed. – He was afraid Mom wouldn’t let me visit him anymore.

– But what does the clock have to do with this? – his mother asked.

The boy pointed at the unconscious pilot.

– Dad gave it to him. I saw it in a photograph.

The flight attendant searched the pilot’s jacket and found his identification card.

It did not bear the name of the captain who had originally been scheduled to operate the flight.

The man had been brought onto the plane at the last minute as a reserve pilot.

HE WAS THE BOY’S FATHER’S FORMER COLLEAGUE.

Finally, a controller’s voice came through the radio clearly.

– Can anyone on board hear us?

The boy put on the headset.

– We can. Both pilots are unconscious. The autopilot is keeping the aircraft stable.

The controller remained silent for a few seconds.

– Who is speaking?

– A passenger.

– HOW OLD ARE YOU?

– Twelve.

Several passengers began to cry.

The controller, however, did not argue. He gave short, precise instructions. A retired military avionics technician also came forward from among the passengers and sat beside the boy. Neither of them could have handled the situation alone, but together they were able to follow the instructions from the ground.

The minutes before landing seemed endless.

The boy’s hands were shaking, but he did not take his eyes off the instruments.

– I’m scared now – he whispered.

His mother stood behind him.

– THAT’S OKAY. JUST DON’T FACE IT ALONE.

The technician operated the controls, while the boy relayed the controller’s instructions.

The plane landed hard.

Smoke rose from one of the wheels, but the aircraft remained on the runway.

When they finally came to a stop, the passengers applauded, cried, and hugged one another.

It was later discovered that the pilots had become ill because of gas leaking from a faulty ventilation system. The boy had not “landed” the plane by himself.

But he recognized the instruments, connected the aircraft with help from the ground, and remained calm enough for others to act.

At the hospital, the captain regained consciousness and revealed that the blue watch had indeed been given to him by the boy’s father.

YEARS EARLIER, THE BOY’S FATHER HAD ALSO SAVED HIS LIFE IN A WORKSHOP ACCIDENT.

That evening, the boy’s mother was not angry because her son had kept a secret.

She was angry because two adults had allowed their own conflict to put a child in the middle.

Later, they established a new rule.

There could be no more dangerous secrets within the family.

The boy continued learning about aviation, but now with permission and under the supervision of a real instructor.

Because that day, what proved his courage was not that he wasn’t afraid.

It was that when he finally became frightened, he still didn’t try to handle everything alone.
